Many MCNP members were surprised and thrilled to hear the segment about our legislation and NPs in Primary Care that has aired several times this week on Boston WGBH news radio.

While the headline "Mass. Considering Allowing Nurse Practitioners To Practice Primary Care" does not recognize that NPs have been providing primary care for a long time and were legally granted PCP status in 2008, it does highlight the importance of our legislation.

MCNP President Stephanie Ahmed delivered compelling arguments against the current restrictive regulatory requirements in Massachusetts as compared to other states.  "Competency does not change with state boundaries. Either you are competent or you are not." She continues "This model of oversight doesn’t exist anywhere else ... You don’t see psychiatry overseeing the psychologists. Optometry being overseen by ophthalmologists. That doesn’t exist. It only exists in nursing."

There were also arguments against the legislation from George Abraham, head of the American College of Physicians for Massachusetts who in addition to challenging our education and training  added "The role of physicians is not so much to supervise or micromanage a nurse practitioner, but as much as when there are more complex patients they’re to be able to supervise, or in other words, be a resource, but at the same time allow them to practice on their own," he said. "Where they are more comfortable making a decision they are able to do that, but where they always have somebody to fall back to."

The notion that we do not have the skills to manage medically complex patients and need to be regulated in order to collaborate and consult when indicated is unfounded.
