The Massachusetts Department of Public Health Bureau of Health Care Safety and Qualityrecently released an advisory related to the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program. Created in response to the state's opioid epidemic, the program creates new monitoring requirements when prescribers issue prescriptions for drugs in Schedule II or III which have been determined to be commonly misused or abused and need additional safeguards.

This Advisory details the final promulgation of amendments to 105 CMR 700.000 (Implementation of M.G.L. c. 94C Controlled Substances Act) related to use of the Prescription Monitoring Program and to 105 CMR 721.000 (Standards for Approved Prescription Forms in Massachusetts).

As enrollment continues for physicians, dentists and podiatrists, the process to automatically enroll prescribing advance practice registered nurses and physician assistants will begin in January, 2015. (Automatic enrollment for all prescribers will continue simultaneously with the renewal of their Massachusetts Controlled Substance Registration.)

The MCNP will remain engaged with the MDPH as the enrollment process for APRNs continues and will forward any additional notices related to this,
