The Massachusetts Coalition of Nurse Practitioners (MCNP) held their Annual Health Policy Event on Wednesday April 8, 2015 at the Hampshire House in Boston in support of HB1996/SD311 An Act to Remove the Restrictions on the Licenses of NPs and CRNA as Recommended by the Institute of Medicine and the Federal Trade Commission.

This event was a HUGE success with Legislators, Nurse Practitioners (NPs), Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) and students across the commonwealth of Massachusetts in attendance. Co-Chairs of the Political Action Committee (PAC) Leah McKinnon Howe and Amy Delaney organized the event which included a morning program with featured speakers from the Massachusetts Association of Nurse Anesthetists (MANA) and the MCNP as well as guest visits from legislators.

MCNP Legislative Chair, Andrea Thurler, and MANA Government Relations Committee Chair, Christopher Hoeman, spoke about the details and definition of the bill including key recommendations from the Institute of Medicine and the Federal Trade Commission. They further discussed how MANA and MCNP members can get involved within in local regional legislative events which will start in the coming weeks and occur throughout the next year. Members were encouraged to "tell a friend” to recruit further involvement.

Gloria Craven our lobbyist from Craven & Ober Policy Strategists, LLC gave a compelling talk on how a bill becomes a law and how we as a profession have the support in numbers; the key to getting our bill passed.

As co-sponsors of our bill, Representative Paul Donato (D- Medford) and Representative Kay Khan (D-Newton) made guest appearances and spoke individually about the benefits that Nurse Practitioners and Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists bring to the citizens of the commonwealth and testified to their own personal healthcare victories through NP and CRNA providers. The crowd roared with enthusiasm as they affirmed their support for the bill.  (Representative Paul Donato pictured top right and Representative Kay Khan pictured bottom right with MCNP & MANA Legislative leaders.)

MCNP PAC Co-Chair, Amy Delaney, gave an engaging presentation about the MCNP Political Action Committee and its role in the legislative process. Leah McKinnon-Howe concluded the program with valuable advice for meeting with lawmakers and garnered enthusiasm which resonated among all members.

Immediately following the breakfast program, many attendees walked up the hill to meet with their legislators. Students and nurse attendees were eager to participate in this part of the program and hold a stake in their profession. One student wrote, "I want to personally thank everyone at MCNP.  The presentations today and the face to face was inspiring for a future NP. Myself and UMASS Lowell NP students worked the state house. We found our inner policy diva.”  (UMASS Lowell students pictured left in Nurses Hall at the State House.)

The MCNP would like to thank our guest legislators, those who took the time meet with our members at the State House and all the NPs, CRNAs and students who attended this great event. Special thanks Elizabeth Donahue who introduced our legislators and served as unofficial hostess, Catherine McKinnon and Peg Carlson who handled the administrative details of the program, and Jennifer Russell who helped coordinate legislative visits.
